Anywhere and Everywhere: Study Abroad

Is your heart set on studying abroad for a semester or even a year of college? Several majors at UVM strongly encourage it - and there's a world full of options available to our students. While some programs have language proficiency expectations, many do not. Counselors in our Office of International Education will help you match up your academic plans and credit requirements, as well as language skills and special interests, with a program that's right for you.

Nearly one-third of UVM students study abroad each year in more then 60 different countries. We love hearing from many of them - like Colin, the camel jockey below, who is in Morocco this semester. He says the green and gold shirt/turban combination he wore on an outing in the Sahara was inadvertant - but proof that UVM's colors go everywhere.

Are you taking the courses you'll need?

High school juniors and sophomores: As you put together your schedule for next year, keep in mind courses you'll need for colleges you might be considering. For instance, will 2 years of the same foreign language suffice, or should you seek depth with 3 or 4? How about lab sciences, will you have what you need by the time you graduate?

Here's a link to information about course work and other criteria required for admission to UVM. Please note: some of our programs require more than the minimum and most successful applicants to the University present course work well in excess of our general requirements.

You can find admissions criteria for most schools by visiting their web sites and searching for information about applying to that school. - Hope you get your dream schedule!

Our Admitted Student Visit (ASV) Days kicked off with programs on February 15th and 22nd. If you are (or hope to be) an admitted student wanting to visit UVM this spring, there are five more Admitted Student Visit Days on April 11, 14, 18, 21, and 25. You also may attend any of our regular Group Information Sessions, but we encourage coming to an ASV Day - it's designed especially for you!

Some program highlights include a presentation by the academic college/school you have been admitted to, getting your UVM ID card, and tours and department open houses throughout the university. There will be plenty of faculty, students, and admissions staff on hand to help you have a great day on campus. Register for an ASV at www.uvm.edu/admissions/rsvp.

Catch the Catamounts...

It's about time we do a UVM sports update here at the Admissions Blog. Our men's soccer team just wrapped up what was a historic season. They won the America East Conference and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Soccer Cup before losing to the #3 ranked team in the country - UConn. With the fall season over, the catamount faithful have turned their attention to hockey and basketball.

Our men's hockey team is a perennial powerhouse and is usually national ranked. Infact, many players go on to play in the NHL including All-stars John LeClair and Martin St. Louis. And you may remember our basketball team from a few years back, when we upset Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Both teams have strong non-conference schedules. This allows fans, outside of New England, to catch the Cats play some of the top teams in the country. Here are links to the schedules of the Men's Hockey Team, Women's Hockey Team, Men's Basketball, and Women's Basketball teams. Last week our men's basketball team traveled down to Tampa, FL to take on the two-time defending national champs - The University of Florida Gators. My colleague, Moses, snapped these two pics during his trip down to the game - one of a billboard outside the stadium, and the other of the scoreboard at the end of the game. Despite the loss, the Catamounts look to have a strong season and will compete for another conference title. Go Cats Go!

Weather reports have us picking up between 6-12 inches, with the mountains getting even more! Classes usually aren't canceled unless we receive 2 feet or more, so don't get your hopes up.
FAQ: I applied early. Now, how do I check my status?

The November 1st Early Action deadline to apply has come and gone, and UVM has seen applications increase over last year's record!

To all those who applied early - there is an easy way to to check the status of your application. Once we receive and process your application (be patient, that can take a week or two at this time of year), we will send you a letter with your login ID and PIN. To check your status, you just visit our Application Status Check page with your login info: www.uvm.edu/admissions/appstatus.

This site will let you know if your application is complete or if we have yet to receive any part of your file. At this point, we have a large number of transcripts still waiting to be recorded, so again please be patient while we process everything. Also, and probably of greatest interest to you, is that your decision will be available on our Application Status Check page. Early Action decisions are posted on December 14th.

If you need any assistance, don’t hesitate to e-mail or call us at admissions@uvm.edu or (802) 656-3370.

I just got back from the Philadelphia National College Fair, and man was I busy. The fair lasted 5 hours and I think I was standing for almost the entire time! This was one of the largest fairs I have ever attended. I think there was close to 500 schools represented. It was a great event, but it is certainly nice to be back home in VT. The temperature has dipped into the 30's and snow has started to cover the mountains. I just picked up a new snowboard and I'm itching to hit the trails - Sugarbush Resort opens Thanksgiving day.
FAQ: How do you get to Burlington?

Another popular question I have heard during my time in the Philadelphia area is: "What is the best way to get to your campus?" Having spent 4 years as a student and 2 years on staff, I can assure you that I have taken the drive many times and have found the best routes from Philly to Burlington.

Quick fact - Burlington has an airport about 3 miles from campus. If you are visiting from outside of New England, flying into BTV (Burlington International Airport) could save time and money. BTV has direct flights to: Philadelphia, Boston, Cleveland, Newark, Atlanta, Cincinnati, New York City (JFK and LaGuardia), Chicago, Washington, D.C. (Dulles Airport and National Airport), and Orlando (starting in January). I find that the best deals are usually found through jetblue, orbitz or kayak.com.

Now, if you are driving up from Philly, there are a few different directions you could follow. Either way, it is best to avoid the congested New Jersey Turnpike. Once you are north of Albany, there are two ways you could go. One way is to get off of I-87 at the Fort Anne/White Hall exit 20, where you can meander your way through New York and Vermont by two-lane state roads (shown here.) Or, you can continue north on I-87 and take a ferry across Lake Champlain. There are two different spots to cross the lake coming from the south. However, only the Essex,NY- Charlotte,VT ferry is open year-round (shown here.) I would definitely recommend taking the ferry at least once. Not only does it save some time if you hit it right, it is a beautiful way to enter our Green Mountain state. To get the ferry schedule visit ferries.com. Either way, making the drive will take you around seven hours - including some short pit stops, whereas to fly takes only an hour.

Hope this helps! Bon Voyage!

FAQ: What is your Early Action policy?

This past weekend, I hopped on a direct flight from Burlington to my hometown of Philadelphia. My schedule for the next two weeks consists of visiting high schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. So far, I have visited nine schools and similar questions seem to pop up. This time of year, the most frequent questions are about our Early Action policies. It got me thinking - it may be time to start a FAQ section of the blog.

Many students are concerned that they won't be able to get all of the required materials in by Nov 1 - their application, common app supplement, high school transcript, mid-year grades, teacher recommendations, and SAT or ACT scores. Well, you will be relieved to know that if you submit your application, and the supplement if you are using the Common Application, by November first, your application will be considered for Early Action. Send the remaining requirements as soon as you can, so that you can hear back by mid December.

I hope this helps to alleviate some of the pressure you might be feeling.
Also, be sure to check out the useful applying to UVM checklist for any other questions you might have.

Feel free to ask your own questions, and I will be sure to get back to you.

Open House attracts visitors from all over the U.S.

UVM held its first of three annual open house events yesterday! Cooler temperatures and a little rain greeted approximately 500 visitors to campus. Prospective students and families toured campus, heard from Admissions and Financial Aid staff, and met with representatives from our seven colleges and schools. We were excited to see many visitors who had traveled great distances to attend this program. I met with prospective students from Atlanta, San Francisco, and Philadelphia who were all very excited to see UVM's campus first hand. I will be traveling to Atlanta and Philadelphia this fall, so it's great to make some connections with students from these areas.

These events have become very popular, so be sure to rsvp online before they fill up. If the open house dates don't work for you, we have many other visit options available. Tours and information sessions are offered Monday-Saturday.
